  1. What type of door? Is this an outside door or inside door? Is the door made of wood, metal or a metal door with a wood core?
  2. Fresh or existing install? Is there already a lock on the door or will this be a fresh install on a new door or door that has never had a lock on it?

  4. Do you really need to change the lock? Many time you don’t need to replace the entire lock, you only need to replace the pins in the existing lock for it to work like new. This is called rekeying and can be done quicker and much more affordably that a complete lock replacement.

How to open a locked car door without using a key

If you’ve ever locked yourself out of your car you know how frustrating that can be! Late for work, locked out of your car in a mall parking lot or stranded late at night, being locked out of your vehicle can ruin your day or even be dangerous. Car doors security and auto lock technology are continually improving and getting back into your vehicle quickly and without damaging the vehicle can be difficult, especially if you don’t have the right tools and experience. Our experienced auto locksmith technicians are trained and have the proper tools to quickly open your locked car door. Depending on your make and model of vehicle will dictate how we cat you back into your car. Listed below are a few different methods for opening a locked car without using the keys.

Pick the Lock and Auto Jigglers

Depending on the make, model and year of your vehicle, some technicians may be able to unlock the door with special lock picking tools. Using a tension tool and picks, they can move the pins to pick the door lock. You could also use a jiggler which is sort of a pre-made generic type key that comes in set for specific vehicle makes. Through trial and error you can test and “jiggle” each on to see if it works in your lock. Lock picking and jigglers may not work on newer cars with precision laser cut keys or transponder keys.

Slim Jim

Popular in movies and TV shows, this is probably what most people imagine when it comes to opening locked car doors. Unlike picking, a slim jim doesn’t try to open the lock itself but opens the door by moving the mechanism in the door. The slim jim is a long flat piece of metal with a notch on the end that you slide down inside the door and hook onto the door latch mechanism and pull it open. Again, like picking, this may not work on newer cars and is usually not recommended to even ty on newer cars as it may damage electronic locks and door airbags.

Wedge & Reach

One of the quickest and easiest ways to open a locked car door and without risk of damaging the lock itself is to use tools to wedge open the door at the window and then use a reach tool to open the lock from inside the car. One method of wedging the door slightly open is to use a thin airbag that can be inserted into the door and inflated to create a gap. Then using a long bendable arm tool you can then reach inside the vehicle and unlock the door. See the video below for quick demonstration of this method.

How to rekey a door lock

What is Lock Rekeying and How to Rekey a Door Lock

What does rekeying a lock mean?

Rekeying a lock is simply the process of changing the pins and springs in the cylinder of an existing lock. Over time and use the springs and pins can become worn and cause the lock to stop working, become difficult to turn with the key, or even become so worn out that the lock can be open with any key that fits into the cylinder.

What are the benefits of rekeying a lock?

There are a couple benefits to rekeying a lock. The first benefit is cost. A professional locksmith can determine if you need to completely replace a lock or if it can simply be rekeyed. Rekeying is just changing the pins and springs in the lock cylinder which is quicker and cheaper than replacing the entire lock. The second benefit is that you can rekey the lock to work with your existing keys or rekey all your locks to work with a single master key.

How do you rekey a lock?

To rekey a lock you will need a kit for your specific lock brand. You’ll need top pins, bottom pins, cylinder follower, remover, gauge detector, springs, and other tools for removing the lock and reinstalling it.  Rekeying involves removing the lock cylinder and replacing the pins and springs to match the cuts in your key. Below is a video in which a CallOrange locksmith technician demonstrates the process:

If you would like to have a professional rekey your door locks and deadbolts for you, give CallOrange a call today; we’re available 24 hours a day! We can rekey your locks, create master key systems and provide discounts for rekeying of multiple locks.

green energy benefits of home automation

Green and Energy Saving Benefits of a Home Automation System

According to the “National Mortgage Professional Magazine” online, studies show home-buyers are now placing a strong emphasis on going green in their homes. One of the best ways to “go green” is home automation. Homeowners are turning to clean technology solutions, and the savings are reportedly going to the top of their list when shopping for a new home. Another survey from the American Institute of Architects determined that consumers want to make saving money through energy automation a significant focus. Not only does it save them money, it also saves energy and helps them cut back on their carbon footprint.

Home automation systems are basically a computerized system used to run such things in your home as electricity, security systems, lighting, temperature, entertainment systems, window blinds and draperies and water sprinklers. The ability to create a home automation system to handle all these capabilities interchangeably is done with what’s called various subsystems, which allow you to set your own automation according to your own personal individualized wants or needs. Home automation systems may once have been a high-end extravagance for the more expensive homes, but in fact their existence is becoming more and more mainstream and accessible to the average middle class due to the extent of the energy savings and efficiency they provide – this energy savings often outranks the expense required to purchasing and installing the home automation system.

For example, the EH network.com reported recently that one of the most popular and practical automation must-haves is an architectural lighting system that allows all light sources – inside and outside the home – to be dimmed and brightened and set on timers in order to achieve the best energy savings, provide visual appeal, set the mood for certain occasions and most important likely better secure the home. Home automation systems give the homeowner a significant amount of peace of mind they would not normally receive.

Home automation brings convenience and a certain measure of peace of mind to homeowners. From within the house or even from afar, by simply using your smartphone, for example, you can check and control the lights and thermostats, receive water-leak alerts, check if your garage door is closed, or find out when the wash is done if you are not in earshot of the chime. You can open the garage door, automatically turn on house lights and deactivate the security system. You can unlock the front door and have house lights turn on automatically, or simply tap the door lock to unlock if your hands are full of groceries. Now that home automation is becoming more mainstream, the prices for them are lowering significantly. Some now consider these home automation systems a necessity and no longer just a perk.

According to an article dated 22 September 2015 on Metering and Smart Energy International.com, location is just one of the main items people consider when looking for a new home. Some requirements people “must have” often include 24×7 surveillance, biometric scans for entrance, door sensors, temperature sensors and smart appliances, among others.

Home automation system

Beginners Guide to Home Automation

Home automation is the ability to access, control, program, and monitor the basic functions and electronic devices in your home automatically, via a control panel, or remotely through a mobile device such as a tablet or smartphone.

Lights – Lighting control systems can automatically turn lights off or on, open and close window shades, or be programmed according to your schedule. You can remotely monitor and control your lights even when away from home. Away from home and forgot to turn off the light in the garage or turn on the outside lights?

Locks – Door locks can be set to automatically unlock as you approach or lock once you are a certain distance away. Away from home and not sure if you forgot to lock a door or need to let a neighbor in? Use your smartphone to remotely lock or unlock the door in your house.

Temperature – Smart thermostats can control temperature and humidity either automatically through sensors that monitor and adjust accordingly or through applications that enable you to adjust setting even when away from home.

Small Appliances – Appliance control modules enable to you to control home appliances such as lamps, coffee makers, and cloths irons. Left the house and realized you forgot to turn off the curling iron in the bathroom. Just use your phone app to turn it off!

While cost for individual automation devices may vary, entry into home automation is fairly affordable. And with CallOrange’s free equipment and installation special currently being offered, getting a home alarm and automation system is risk free! CallOrange also offers monitoring for half the price of most competitors at only $29.99 per month with NO annual contract!
